This chapter focuses on the role of energy in fulfilling basic human needs and supporting development, as reflected in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the Human Development Index (HDI). It discusses the current trends in energy consumption, highlighting the challenges of demand and supply at both global and national (Nepal) levels. The unit also introduces major environmental concerns such as global warming and the clean development mechanism (CDM) as part of sustainability efforts. Students learn the difference between conventional energy sources (fossil fuels, nuclear energy) and non-conventional/renewable energy sources, building the foundation for the detailed study of renewable energy in the next unit.
