A Court of Thorns and Roses book Summary
Feyre’s Struggles in the Mortal World
Feyre Archeron, the youngest of three sisters, lives in poverty with her broken family. She provides for them through hunting. One winter’s day, she kills a massive wolf in the forest to ensure her family’s survival. Unbeknownst to her, the wolf was actually a Fae in disguise.
Taken to Prythian
Soon after, a beastly creature arrives at her home demanding justice. The beast, who later reveals himself as Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court, gives Feyre a choice: die for her crime or live in Prythian for the rest of her days. She chooses to live in Prythian, beginning a new, frightening chapter of her life.
Life in the Spring Court
At Tamlin’s court, Feyre discovers the beauty and danger of the Fae world. Although she resents her captivity at first, she begins to see Tamlin’s gentleness beneath his beastly exterior. Feyre grows close to him and also befriends Lucien, Tamlin’s emissary.
Over time, she notices strange happenings—hints of a greater curse plaguing Prythian. Tamlin reveals that all the High Lords are weakened because of a powerful enemy: Amarantha, who rules from Under the Mountain.
The Curse and Romance
As Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship deepens into romance, Feyre learns that Tamlin’s court suffers under a curse placed by Amarantha. The spell can only be broken if a mortal woman proves her love in impossible circumstances.
Just as Feyre and Tamlin’s bond blossoms, Tamlin sends her away to keep her safe. But Feyre soon realizes her love for him is true—and returns to Prythian to face Amarantha herself.
Under the Mountain – Feyre’s Trials
Feyre offers herself to Amarantha in exchange for Tamlin’s freedom. Amarantha accepts, but only if Feyre completes three deadly trials or solves an impossible riddle.
- Trial One: Feyre battles a massive worm-like beast, relying on her hunting instincts to outsmart it.
- Trial Two: Trapped in a deadly chamber filled with spikes and riddles, Feyre struggles to survive—here, Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, intervenes and bargains with her: he will help her in exchange for a future debt (spending one week with him each month).
- Trial Three: Feyre is ordered to kill three Fae prisoners. In the last test, she realizes one of them is Tamlin himself. To save him and break the curse, she stabs him—proving her love and sacrifice.
The Riddle and Amarantha’s Defeat
Even after the trials, Amarantha refuses to release Tamlin. Feyre, broken and near death, solves Amarantha’s riddle about love, shattering the curse. In rage, Amarantha kills Feyre.
But Tamlin and the other High Lords combine their powers to revive her—transforming Feyre into a High Fae herself.
Ending
Though Tamlin and Feyre are reunited, Feyre carries deep emotional scars from her time Under the Mountain. Meanwhile, her bargain with Rhysand remains unresolved, hinting at greater conflicts and relationships to come in the series.
