LPM 101: Introductory Animal Science

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand domestication and general husbandry practices of farm animals and poultry.
- Learn the identification, management, and health care of various livestock species.
- Understand housing systems, animal handling, marketing, record keeping, and stress management.
- Gain knowledge of high mountain animals and forage conservation practices.
I. Syllabus Overview
Topics include:
- Commonly used terms in animal husbandry and poultry.
- Importance, scope, and constraints of livestock/poultry farming in Nepal.
- Zoological classification and common breeds of farm animals and poultry.
- Differences between ruminant and non-ruminant animals.
- Housing systems, identification, ageing, weighing, castration, dehorning/disbudding.
- Restraining, handling, marketing, and transportation of animals.
- Health management, stress amelioration, barn sanitation, and waste handling.
- Care of different categories of animals (newborn, pregnant, lactating, sick).
- High mountain animals and feeding practices.
- Forage conservation and use of NPN in ruminant feeding.
